Upton Sinclair letters and related materials, 1908-1956.

The collection includes eleven items, consisting of eight letters, a signed photograph of Sinclair, a booklet, and a copy of Liberty magazine with an article by Sinclair. The letters include: to the Literary Agency of London, 24 April 1908, describing arrangements for his novel, The Moneychangers; to B. Russell Herts, 19 Jan. 1915, thanking him for a copy of his book, typewritten with a handwritten post script; to Captain Aaron E. Carpenter, 25 Sept. 1922, describing a disagreement with him and declining to send an autographed photo; to John M. Stahl, 8 Nov. 1926, describing himself as a Socialist; to Robley D. Stevens, 6 Jan. 1939, responding to questions and sending a photograph; to R.F. Perotti, 13 Jan. 1956, about an alleged first edition of The Jungle; to My dear Lamparski, 24 May 1959, about some reels of film; to My dear Mrs. Bean, 20 April 1965, replying to her letter with a picture, on the back of a pamphlet describing the Sinclair exhibit at the Lilly Library of Indiana University. Also, signed portrait photograph of an aged Sinclair sitting out of doors with a Royal typewriter; pamphlet, circa early 1920s, with quotes about Sinclair and longer passages about him and his writing, 32 p., cover and title lacking; copy of Liberty Magazine, 20 Oct. 1934, featuring an article by Sinclair with the title, "What I am really going to do," describing his platform as Democratic candidate for Governor of California.

Upton Sinclair was born in Baltimore, Maryland in 1878. Sinclair was an American author, novelist, journalist, and political activist who wrote many books in several genres. He is most well-known for his exposé, The Jungle regarding conditions in Chicago's meat packing plants, which influenced the passage of the Meat Inspection Act and the Pure Food and Drug Act in 1906.
